Acclaimed and controversial Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee is never short on opinions, especially when it comes to golf instructional books. Last month, while attending the U.S. Open, Golf Digest caught up with Chamblee to discuss his new book Anatomy of Greatness and Brandel did not hold back.

“In my opinion, a lot of

[amateur golfers] are getting poor information that’s damaging not only to the length of their careers but to their physical health,” Chamblee said. And he didn’t stop there.

When asked what was the most interesting thing he learned while researching his book, Brandel matter of factly told Golf Digest it was the “myths” of golf instruction books that have permeated libraries for decades.

“A lot of instruction is wayward. It is built on myths that have been perpetuated, to the extent that you now see rigid backs and rigid hard lines and posture on the PGA Tour. And that is looked at as ideal.”

And he didn’t stop there, noting how the research for his book led Brandel to an almost unanimous conclusion on what the best golf swing contains.

“There were a lot of eye-opening things that I discovered researching, and a lot of commonalities in the greatest swings of all-time. Among them, of the 50 greatest winners on the PGA Tour, 46 of them shared almost all of these characteristics, and of the players who have won five majors or more, almost all of them, with the exception of three, have lifted their left heel and moved off the ball and had these commonalities. Those things are looked at with crossed eyes today.”
