AW Tillinghast Golf Course Architect

While fans are eagerly awaiting the release of author Chris Buie’s The Life and Times Of Donald Ross, Classics of Golf would like to turn your attention to another legendary golf course architect, A.W. Tillinghast.

Born in 1874, Albert Warren (A.W.) Tillinghast took golf lessons from Old Tom Morris, was an admirer of St Andrews, and used that knowledge to become a true pioneer of American golf.  He was a prolific architect, with more than 100 U.S. courses to his credit.  He was also an original member of the PGA of America and authored a slew of books about the game. “Tilly” was enshrined into the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum as part of the Class of 2015

Several of Tillinghast’s designs are still considered among the world’s best and used frequently for golf’s major championships. Bethpage State Park, Winged Foot, Baltusrol Golf Club, San Francisco Golf Club, Quaker Ridge and Somerset Hills are all Tillinghast designs.

Bob Trebus, President of The Tillinghast Association, discusses at length A.W. Tillinghast: Creator Of Golf Courses Deluxe Hardcover Edition published by Classics of Golf, in the video above and provides terrific detail on Tilly’s work at Baltusrol.

This first edition, 166 page comprehensive book, published in 1995, details the centennial history of the club with easy-to-read text and more than 460 color and black and white pictures dating as far back as 1895 and continuing to the present time.
